At Mid American, we want to do more than make donations to worthy causes. We want to make a difference. Our Kansas communities are great places to live and work, but there's always room for improvement. Our credit union supports a wide range of organizations that tackle issues ranging from domestic violence and homelessness to financial literacy and nurturing young people.

An animal rescue group based in Wichita that rescues death row animals from the shelter and places them in foster homes that can help them become adoptable animals. It does not discriminate against breed, age, medical needs or behavior. Founded in late 2014, it is a 100% volunteer-run organization, relying entirely on donations.

Located in Lawrence, Bert Nash is the designated community mental health center and certified community behavioral health clinic in Douglas County, Kansas. Founded in 1950 in honor of Dr. Bert Nash, an educational psychologist at The University of Kansas, the center provides research-based services as a safety-net provider and essential health care service for children, families and adults, regardless of their ability to pay.

Started as an event in 2015, Create Campaign is an organization committed to the business efforts and growth of African American and Hispanic/Latino entrepreneurs and innovators. Working in both Wichita and Kansas City, Create Campaign has served more than 1,550 entrepreneurs through business development training, microloans, start-up support and more.

A longtime MACU financial literacy partner, Consumer Credit Counseling Service was formed in 1985 to help average and low-income households learn to build financial stability. Credit counseling is free to those who qualify. CCCS often partners with MACU staff to provide financial education programs to MACU members, SEGs and nonprofit groups.

Empowers unhoused families and children to overcome homelessness and home insecurity. Its services include providing overnight lodging and meals and a day house that provides a consistent address while families receive case management services, job skills training and connections to community resources.

A federally qualified health center, GraceMed offers dentistry, optometry, behavioral health and medical services on a sliding fee scale to the underserved and uninsured in 12 Wichita locations as well as locations in Topeka, McPherson and Clearwater. It also has several education and outreach programs - including helping Kansans enroll in KanCare and the health insurance insurance marketplace - and a prescription assistance program for its patients.

Created in 1972, Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. provides a variety of financial services programs such as budget and debt counseling, repayment plans (particularly when life circumstances change one’s financial situation), along with homebuyer and tenant and landlord programs. It has locations in Topeka, Lawrence, Emporia and Manhattan and also provides Zoom and phone counseling sessions.

Named in recognition of Jackie Robinson, the first Black Major League Baseball player — was founded in July 2013 to provide an affordable opportunity for Wichita’s urban youth to play baseball without the much higher costs of organizational or recreation leagues. Playing on revitalized fields in McAdams Park in northeast Wichita, the organization has grown to include about 600 youth players with an expanded mission of also providing educational support for urban youth.

This program was created by NexStep Alliance, Goodwill Industries of Kansas, the Kansas Department of Corrections, WSU Tech and the Workforce Centers Of Kansas. Those who are on parole or probation can be referred to the program to work on their GED while also working toward a technical certification from WSU Tech. The free program gives those involved with the justice system the chance to gain an education and a life-sustaining income.

For several years, Mid America has supported Pando Initiative's Realty U, an interactive financial literacy and school engagement activity that teaches students about finance and the importance of good decision-making. Students imagine their life as a 26-year-old and complete an online lifestyle survey, including questions about their occupation, marital status, children and their current grade point average (GPA). When they receive their profile, they then must plan to create a budget for their life scenario and learn important financial decision-making skills.

About 8,000 individuals a year receive support and services from Safehome, a domestic violence shelter based in the Kansas City area. It offers a 24-hour hotline, counseling, safety planning, and court and legal services, along with its safe shelter.

Founded in 1930, Starkey is the oldest community-based nonprofit in Sedgwick County serving people with intellectual disabilities. It offers a wide range of employment, residential, life enrichment and case management programs to help its clients achieve progress toward independence, experience meaningful relationships and be of value to their community.

StepStone provides support, care and services for domestic violence survivors in the Wichita area. Its services include counseling, life skills training, budget counseling, educational and career goal-setting and parenting skills, as well as transitional housing. Created in 1995, StepStone is a collaborative ministry of the Congregation of St. Joseph and the Adorers of the Blood of Christ in Wichita.

Summer Activity Camps is a neighborhood specialty camp program created in partnership with the city of Wichita’s police department and recreation and park department to provide a safe summer alternative to engage neighborhood kids. Mid American provides a financial literacy curriculum throughout the summer that teaches kids about money and how to save.

A domestic violence recovery program, The Women’s Network offers survivors paths toward financial and economic independence. Along with providing therapy and case management services, the nonprofit also offers education and employment opportunities and is home to Wichita’s Dress for Success program. Originally known as the Women’s Initiative Network, it was founded in 1997.
